“I wanted it to be something delicious and sexy”

Creative people create. There’s something inside, and their soul cannot find peace until that something has been set free. While the drive is consistent, the medium may change. A potter might paint, a poet might take up piano, or an actress might sing.

Kate Hudson is known for being an actress. But throughout her entire life, she has flirted with the music world. She plays piano, guitar, writes songs, and sings. Her breakout role was Penny Lane (Almost Famous), a vivacious girl who believed it was her duty to inspire artists to create great music. She also had a five-episode run on Glee. Even in her real life, Hudson seems to have a type: musician. It seems like a natural progress for Kate to finally embrace this side of her creativity.

“It’s like the shadow self,” she acknowledged, “those things you don’t see, but are always with you and a part of you. I have always had a room for my piano ever since I began living on my own. I’ve been caught up writing and witnessing life in songs since I was a child. But it always comes down to the moment, and the ability to make sure you can be there for the music. Finally, for me, that time is now.”

Today, Kate released her debut single, “Talk About Love.” It is an upbeat track that contains something old, something new, something borrowed, and something just a little bluesy to affirm her union with music. Listeners are dappled with a sonic splash of influences that range from the ’70s to the ’90s, yet the song has an effervescent glimmer that is wonderfully fresh and exciting. Kate’s warm and confident vocals have a robust power that crescendos throughout the track, gradually revealing the extent of her formidable vocal prowess.

“You only have one first single, and I wanted it to be something delicious and sexy and all the things that I believe in. I wanted it to be open and seeking, searching to find something powerful. But I also wanted the music to be the rock, the pop, the dance music and even a bit of the alternative records I love. It was a lot to put into one song, but thankfully, I had some wonderful people working with me.”

Kate wrote “Talk About Love” with Linda Perry (singer, songwriter, musician, producer) and her fiancé, Danny Fujikawa (singer, songwriter, musician, producer). It was produced by Johan Carlsson (Carolina Liar, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne) and Fujikawa.

“Linda challenged me to write a full album once she heard me sing,” Hudson recalled. “And that’s when I decided to complete the song cycle. It might’ve been crazy to some, but once I committed, all the songs, the sounds and even the way the recording process came together, the timing was right.”

This single is just the first track of Hudson’s upcoming full-length album, which will be released later this year. With a lifetime of waiting, how did Kate know the time was right to launch her music career?

“How do you ever know? And then one day, you’re writing, and you think, ‘Now.'”
