“Lonely Assassin” is the latest single from Baby Bloodlust, a captivating artist with a lush musical style that is loyal to artistry, not trends. Her influences range from The Beatles and Michael Jackson to Lana Del Rey and A$AP Rocky. Her voice has an ethereal beauty that is as enthralling as a siren’s song.

According to the artist, “Lonely Assassin” was inspired by Lana Del Rey’s “Serial Killer.” Baby Bloodlust wanted it to be about how she picks a ‘victim’ to pursue romantically.

“The name is from the Weeping Angel episodes of Doctor Who,” Baby Bloodlust revealed. “I see myself as an assassin… hunting down men. I’m lonely because it’s like I’m a sniper. I thought it fit well because the Weeping Angels are the loneliest aliens in the universe.”

When she writes a song, the melody usually comes first. After that, the lyrics just start flowing. When she has finished writing, Baby Bloodlust sends a rough recording to her producer with somewhat unusual notes. For example, on “Lonely Assassin,” she told her producer “it needs to seem like nighttime and raining.” After she gets the music back and is satisfied that her producer has captured the mood—“he just knows what I want”—she records the vocals. Finally, Baby Bloodlust and her producer tweak bits here and there until the song is finished.

“Lonely Assassin” fades in with a gentle rain and a haunting melody that paint an intriguing scene of a nighttime rendezvous. However, when the chorus arrives, the mood shifts and the intensity escalates. Baby Bloodlust revealed that she pulled the chorus from a demo of a previous song and updated it to fit this new track. She also pointed out that the chorus has a different level of intimacy than the verses: “The chorus is meant to be me whispering in the guy’s ear, so that’s me directly talking to him.”

When asked what her favorite part of writing was, Baby Bloodlust replied, “I always love the middle 8 section. I think you guys call it a bridge? It’s always something that I put so much thought into.”

As for the hardest part, that comes when she’s recording. Because she was never formally trained in music, the toughest part of the process for Baby Bloodlust is the timing. She’ll often record with a click track or her producer will conduct her performance, waving her in at key points. However, for “Lonely Assassin,” the artist did not need any help. The recording went smoothly, with Baby Bloodlust completing all of her tracks in just 30 minutes.

“Lonely Assassin” is a vibe. It’s a dark romance that is delivered with grace and beauty. The music and lyrics meld to create an atmospheric tryst that will stain your soul with an intoxicatingly intimate moment that you might never get over.

If you’re wondering about the story behind her provocatively dark but still cute stage name, Baby Bloodlust told Entertaining Options, “I needed something that reminded me of Lana Del Rey. She has all these cute names that she went by before, such as ‘Sparkle Jump Rope Queen.’ I love vampires and the thought of lusting over blood, and the ‘Baby’ makes it less morbid.”
