What Is Weave-n-Wonder?

Weave-n-Wonder is the name of the family-led crafting kit company that was developed by Dr. Gargi Bhaduri, a mom and professor who lives in Hudson, Ohio. The small business was shaped by research on how young children learn. Its purpose is to help kids feel confident and creative while learning early math, patterning, and algorithmic thinking.

How Does This Educational Weaving Loom Work?

Weave-n-Wonder kits are screen-free activities that involve setting up a loom and following instructions to weave a variety of fun and colorful crafts. Each project is beginner-friendly, so any kid, 7 and up, can jump right in and learn how to recognize and create patterns, weave, and build trust in their own skills and abilities.

The STEAM Component: The Math and Coding Value Explained

It might sound pretentious to say weaving introduces a child to pre-coding and algorithmic thinking, but those terms simply describe basic yet powerful tools for intellectual development.

Pre-coding

In the context of early math skills, pre-coding can be as simple as sorting shapes and colors, or recognizing patterns, like blue-green-yellow-blue-green-yellow. As a child progresses, the skill involves not only recognizing and creating patterns, but predicting what comes next as well. Pre-coding also helps with spatial awareness and understanding directions, such as “go straight for one block, then turn right.” When combined with algorithmic thinking [see the next section], pre-coding makes navigating life’s problems less of a challenge and more of a puzzle or an adventure. It is a fundamental building block for step-by-step logical thinking.

Algorithmic thinking

Algorithmic thinking is simply a fancy way of saying you take a big problem and break it down into manageable pieces — instead of trying to carry five bowling balls at once, you make five trips carrying one bowling ball at a time to get the task done with ease. Algorithmic thinking also involves using logic and reasoning and planning to solve a problem by looking for simple patterns, rather than taking a wild guess. It makes life easier and reduces anxiety and stress.

Social-Emotional & Fine Motor Skills Benefits

When a child decides to complete one of Weave-n-Wonder’s projects, it helps them learn patience and persistence in manageable portions — all crafts can be completed in roughly an hour or less. The young crafter learns how to work through any initial frustrations to feel the pride in accomplishing a task. And all the while they are working, the child is fine-tuning their fine motor skills to learn to coordinate the small muscles in their hands, fingers, and wrists to make precise, controlled movements.

Behind the Brand: Interview with Creator Gargi Bhaduri, PhD

Can you tell us a little about your life and what led you to create Weave-n-Wonder?
Growing up in India, my mom was very artistic. She wasn’t a professional artist, but we always were very hands-on with making and creating things. My dad was a medical doctor, and as a family, we were extremely science-driven. I believe this unique combination, where art and science thrived together and co-existed, shaped me into who I am today. I entered a fashion program for my undergrad, but given my love for numbers and facts, I chose fashion as a business pathway and not solely as design. That led me to research and higher education as I completed my Master’s and PhD with a focus on Human Environmental Sciences, understanding how fashion is a product of our environments.

I moved on to teaching, and as a professor of fashion merchandising; I get to teach a lot of young men and women. These students love the creative field but would often struggle with math at the very introduction of business/retail math and would indicate that they are not “a math person.” It kind of stuck with me over the years (this is my 16th year of teaching) and I kept on finding fun ways to teach retail math/business math so that students would feel confident and comfortable learning it. I always put a lot of emphasis on real applications of math, and provide a space to make mistakes because mistakes show us a different path we would otherwise never take.

I tried to create a similar environment at home for my two little kids. My husband is in the technology field, and we both place a great emphasis on science in raising our two kids. We encourage our kids to observe things around them and find explanations of the “why” and the “how.” We also try to show them numbers and logic in everyday life.

In late 2024, I started on a weaving project. I was working on a research project to understand how to re-use textile waste as well as a way to develop skills in local artisans. As I wove, I kept on thinking how weaving is like coding — I am calculating yardage, manipulating patterns, and creating algorithms to make a specific design. I also looked at digital weaving and realized it is the perfect combination of art meeting science as we have to program everything, stepwise, in a structured format, before we even begin. I would come back home, and as I showed my kids and explained what I did and how I made the samples, it struck me that I could use weaving as a tool to teach them basic math, patterns, pre-coding, algorithms and so much more!

I searched the market for available looms and kits, but none of them served my purpose. They were [mostly] potholder looms that did not provide a structured instructional approach that showed how math and patterns were embedded in design. There were some that were a bit versatile, but solely focused on arts and for little kids. I felt the need to explicitly show them the relation between arts and science. So I designed and made our own and worked with an early childhood instructional designer to make sure that my thoughts were being clearly communicated. And Weave-n-Wonder was born!

Can you talk a little more about how fashion and science are connected?
In my high school years, I was very good in math and statistics. Yet I did not like core sciences as a field of study. So I went to fashion business where I could apply math and statistics not only from a business perspective but also be a researcher who focused on quantitative research and social experiments to understand human behavior. Many people do not realize that fashion can be a very scientific field wherein we do a lot of very structured research to understand human behavior!

Who came up with the name Weave-n-Wonder? What does it mean to you?
I came up with the name. For me, reflecting or “wondering” about a process or outcome is the most important part of learning. So I wanted to reflect that in the name — you weave and you wonder (or reflect) on the how and the why. Also, it is incredibly powerful to start with a yarn and come up with a usable product using weaving, so there is that aspect of “wonder” in there too!

A lot of people don’t know that the name of the company is Fabric of Learning, and I do business as “Weave-n-Wonder.” It is called Fabric of Learning because I want to create more kits in the future that teach basic science concepts using fashion as a lens.

Who was the first person to believe in you?
The first people to believe in me were my husband and my kids. They still believe!

Was the initial idea more about doing crafts and having fun, or was it always tied to teaching and learning and child development?
I was working on my research project, and the lightbulb kind of went off! I first tried weaving in my undergrad program but never thought of it otherwise. It was only about two decades later that I realized how powerful of a teaching tool it could be. I have always believed in reflection, and that is when I understood that weaving is not just fiber arts but is strongly rooted in science. I knew then that this was a tool and a technique that had immense potential to teach abstract concepts. After searching the market, there was nothing available that I could teach my kids with in the way I was envisioning, so I came up with one on my own!

How did you move from idea to an actual physical kit?
I am a maker at heart and soul, thanks to my upbringing! I started designing my own looms and playing with various materials at makerspaces [a place where people can gather to design, build, invent, and share projects and ideas] to see what worked. The first few prototypes were very disheartening, to put it nicely. But then, after a few iterations, it worked! I still modify my designs to this day, to improve on user experience but also to reduce production waste. I also still use makerspaces to make my looms and then use my basement for the rest of the kits.

Did you have experience in business or manufacturing, or was it trial and error?
I have no business background in my immediate family. So it was all just figuring it out by doing and failing and redoing. I do have a manufacturing background — which I learnt in my undergrad (apparel production) — so I know how to make this “efficient,” “less waste,” set up an assembly line, etc. But theory and practice are very different.

We still make our own looms and assemble all the kits. As we scale up, instead of outsourcing manufacturing, we plan to set up our own here in the US. Hopefully, that will become possible some day!

What was the scariest part of doing this?
I am a very calculated risk-taker. So every investment I make is scary. But the scariest part of it all was going in front of people on social media! It is weird. I am a professor and have taught large classes with 450+ students. So my job is public-facing. But the idea of recording myself and telling my story on social media is nerve-racking to me! I still struggle, but I’m getting better, I guess.

What keeps you going despite the challenges?
My family really keeps me going. They believe in me. Every person I talk to at vendor markets keeps me going. They tell me how they like that the kits are hands-on, screen-free, made in the USA, and so much more! But in all honesty, my husband is my biggest strength. He is the firmest believer in this, and it keeps us going. He is also all things technical behind Weave-n-Wonder: the website, the equipment, the table-carrier, and the tent-setter-upper at vendor fairs. He is the one who balances family and kids when I spend so much time doing Weave-n-Wonder. And our kids are product testers, brutal feedback givers, cheerleaders, and product-packers at time-crunch moments! Family businesses do not happen without family.

Did something in your schedule open up to give you the time to do this?
Nothing opened up. Everything was just squeezed in. I often update social media at baseball games, or wind yarn at track meets. It is messy and exhausting, but rewarding!

What is your typical day like?
BUSY! My husband and I both have pretty demanding full-time jobs that we really like, so we do spend substantial time in those. Then kids, and then Weave-n-Wonder. I often do not have time to do what needs to be done in a day, but hey, tomorrow is a new day (with carried-over tasks, though)!

How hands-on are you? Did you write the instructions, create the designs, take photos, print the plastic parts, etc.?
Very hands-on. I have done every bit of it. Conceptualizing, illustrating, figuring out designs, taking photos, designing and making the looms, you name it, my husband and I do it! We are even designing small machines to help us wind yarns the way we want for the kits because we weren’t able to find one we liked without it costing an arm and a leg. We never knew we had the skills to do so much until we did it!

Does that mean each kit is assembled by hand?!
Yes, each kit is assembled by hand and even the yarn is wrapped by hand. We make the looms at makerspaces within 30 minutes of where we live in Ohio. Only our instruction booklets are printed outside of our home. The rest is all on our kitchen tables (and literally everywhere else in our home).

Who has greater interest in Weave-n-Wonder kits: adults or kids?
I would say both. Kids see how fun it can be, and adults see the screen-free, hands-on STEAM learning aspect of it. The kits are also travel-friendly, and they are very handy in car-rides and other travel. Parents love these aspects.

Besides the intellectual benefits, does weaving offer any physical or emotional benefits?
Weaving is often used in occupational therapy. It takes coordination and fine motor skills. Plus, there’s the joy of creating that our kits deliver. We make our projects short and bite-sized so that nothing takes longer than an hour. Kids can practice patience and mindfulness. In fact, bracelets take 15-20 minutes, and kids find real joy in seeing something they created. It is the “I did it” moment for them. Also, it teaches problem solving. If kids weave it wrong, they just weave out and fix it. Science comes with a right answer or a wrong answer. But when you combine science with art, every wrong move leads to new art!

Which is your favorite kit?
It is like picking a favorite child. I love them all! The Original Loom was our first creation, and I love the versatile aspect. It makes bookmarks, mini rugs, tapestries, and bracelets!

An interesting story behind the bracelet kits: The bracelet kit was actually created from waste from the original looms. We were cutting out the original looms and leaving pretty sizable material waste. In the meantime, my kids wanted to “wear” what they created. So came the bracelet looms that actually use the wasted material of the original looms, and it is one of our best-sellers! Kids absolutely adore the bracelets they make. At fairs, I even get asked if I would sell bracelets! Sometimes, trash is truly treasure!

Which design do you like best?
The tapestry design is my favorite as kids see that with simple knots, things can look so fancy!

Where can people get supplies? Is it best to get them from Weave-n-Wonder, or can they get any yarn at a craft store?
We are working on supply kits. But in reality, they can get it from anywhere. Our kits are designed to teach a skill and allow kids to use their creativity to then make anything they can! If creativity has no bounds, why should they be bound by material choices?

Do you have any other ideas you will be pursuing? Does this success make you excited about different craft kits, or are you staying focused on weaving?
Our brains are always churning! We are working on a few other ideas of how to incorporate techniques like printing, sewing, knitting, etc., in developing STEAM kits. But given we are a small team, it may be a bit before we can put those out in the market. For now, we are focusing on Weave-n-Wonder and getting it to as many loving homes as we can!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of this venture so far?
At every vendor fair, I keep a large loom for people to try. It is so rewarding to see kids and adults give it a try, trust the process, and weave a row of our community fabric. It is the most wonderful feeling!

What message do you have for families who have been supportive?
Thank you for trusting us. You are the reason we exist, and you are the reason we keep believing.

What is the best way for people to follow and support you?
As a small business, we would love your support! We sell online at Weave-n-Wonder and through local stores in Hudson, Ohio. Shipping is free over $39.99! Your purchase gives us the ability to invest in our business, invest in equipment, and to keep production in-house as we always hope to.

We would also love it if you subscribed to our mailing list [at the bottom of the page on this link]. We send out free resources and coupons from time to time (but never junk and we will never sell your info). You can also follow us on Instagram.

And if you cannot do any of the above, just share a word about us with someone you know. Sharing is caring!

Weave-n-Wonder Review: Should You Buy This STEAM Kit?

Yes! If you have kids 7 or above, or if you are an adult who’d like to learn a relaxing new-to-you pastime, Gargi’s kits are a wonderful option! We’re not just saying that because they are colorful and look like so much fun. We tried them! Weave-n-Wonder products deliver on every promise the company makes.

In addition to the STEAM aspects, the fine motor development, and patience, these kits can help teach your child to focus and train their working memory — the scratch pad of the brain — to be efficient because kids need to keep track of where they are in the pattern at all times. After completing the projects, Entertaining Options discovered firsthand that Weave-n-Wonder kits offer many benefits and rewards. One of our favorites was that feeling of satisfaction that comes with a job well done!

Speaking of completing, we love that these are bite-sized crafts that your child will actually finish! If you’re like us, you have a closet full of projects that you or your kids started without realizing the skills, commitment, or additional materials required to complete, so they languish half-finished on the shelves of craft purgatory until spring cleaning. This won’t happen with Weave-n-Wonder because you can go from opening the box to completing your first project in about an hour or so.

Apart from the challenge of manipulating adult-sized fingers to tie tiny yarn knots, Weave-n-Wonder crafts are easy, beginner-level projects. The kits have everything you need, are travel-ready, and you can reuse them to create your own designs. Best of all, it’s been a joy communicating with the company. We had a few questions about our kit and found customer service to be exceptional. We received a prompt, friendly, and helpful response. It felt like we’d made a new friend. Weave-n-Wonder places the emphasis on what’s important, making the company stand out as a place you truly want to support and see thrive.
