This September, Lifetime has a trio of gripping thrillers that have been “ripped from the headlines.” These movies will engage you on a raw, emotional level with a vileness that is, unfortunately, far more dastardly than fiction. Be warned that these films contain a level of brutality against women that may be upsetting.
I Was A Child Bride: The Courtney Stodden Story (airing on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8/7c on Lifetime) delves into childhood exploitation, trauma, and transformation. The Girl Who Survived: The Alina Thompson Story (airing on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 8/7c on Lifetime) examines the life of an aspiring teenage model who puts her trust in a charismatic serial killer who promises he can make her famous.
However, this article focuses on A Husband to Die For: The Lisa Aguilar Story (airing on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8/7c on Lifetime). The story begins with Lisa Aguilar, a vibrant, loving young woman, telling her husband, Darren, that she is pregnant. Instead of being excited, the aspiring professional golfer is momentarily perplexed and seems a little annoyed. He quickly snaps to his senses and begins assuring his wife that he is thrilled.
The audience learns that Darren is hiding a secret. Tension builds as a naive and trusting Lisa refuses to believe the signs, even when her husband’s actions grow increasingly darker and more violent. As he becomes desperate to keep the truth hidden, it is clear that Darren will do anything to protect his double life, including murdering his wife and unborn child. Will she realize before it’s too late?
Lisa is played by Keana Lyn Bastidas. The talented actress delivers a captivating performance which covers a broad range of emotions. Viewers will become infuriated by the unshakable, childlike faith she has in her husband. But it will turn to championing cries of encouragement as she searches to find her inner strength with the help of her grandmother, Gabrielle, who is masterfully played by Marilu Henner.
Jon McLaren has the unenviable task of bringing the villainous Darren to life. His smarmy lies and the despicable confidence he displays (because he believes he is untouchable) fuel a rage that ensures this film will be a wonderfully cathartic event.
A Husband to Die For: The Lisa Aguilar Story is produced by 1Department Entertainment in association with Lighthouse Pictures and Wishing Floor Films.
