Happy Valen-Vines Day!

Red Vines get a cinnamon twist this Valentine’s Day

Cinnamon is sweet and woodsy, with just a hint of spice. The evocative combination of flavors makes it a perfect match for Valentine’s Day. This year, the American Licorice Company has spiced up its immensely popular Red Vines Twists by adding a dash of cinnamon to make the holiday a little more exciting.

Valentine’s Day, like many other celebrations and traditions, has evolved over the years. The holiday is thought to have its roots in a Roman festival called Lupercalia that fell on February 15 and involved sacrifices made to a she-wolf deity to protect herds from wolves. The festival also reportedly included a lottery that paired men and women off in a fertility ritual.

Today, Valentine’s Day can be just about whatever you want. At its core, it symbolizes a loving relationship. However, that relationship doesn’t have to be between two affectionates. Valentine’s Day can celebrate the relationship between a parent and a child, two besties, humans and their fur babies, or even just a special day of self pampering — because we all deserve someone as wonderful as us!

As far back as the Mayans, people believed that chocolate had powers that could enhance attraction and escalate desire. In short, it was an aphrodisiac. Historically, then, it is simple to see how chocolate and fertility rituals could intersect. As the holiday grew in popularity (and became increasingly commercialized), more and more manufacturers wanted in on the profits, so other types of candy became acceptable gifts. Since the color red symbolizes passion (or love), and vines are known for intertwining to create a remarkably durable union between two, giving Red Vines on Valentine’s Day can be a sweet romantic gesture, especially when you add a little spice, such as cinnamon, to the equation.

  • Red Vines are not licorice: Although they look like licorice, all Red Vines (except black licorice Red Vines) are made from corn syrup, wheat flour, citric acid, artificial flavor, and red 40. Not licorice.
  • Red Vines come in a variety of flavors: Besides the original red flavor, Red Vines are (or have been) available in strawberry, cinnamon, grape, root beer, orange cream, black licorice, and more.
  • Red Vines are purposely hollow: To keep Red Vines soft and chewy, the company purposely makes Red Vines hollow. However, if you prefer a little more tenacity, Red Vines are also available as solid Ropes.
  • Red Vines make an excellent sweet and chewy ingredient: You don’t have to eat Red Vines on their own (although that is an excellent way to enjoy this sweet treat). You can use them in a wide variety of recipes. Here are some recipes that range from yummy treats to fun adult beverages.
  • Red Vines Made Simple is the plant-based non-GMO version of Red Vines.
