In this new series from PodCo (The PodCast Company), fans of “Full House” get to watch Dave Coulier as he reminisces with special guests on what it was like growing up in the Tanner household.
There was a time when Friday nights were all about watching TV. You could grab a comfy spot on the sofa and hunker down for a two-hour long block of entertainment called TGIF. Over the years, the ABC lineup included such greats as “Boy Meets World,” “Hanging with Mr. Cooper,” “Step by Step,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Dinosaurs,” and “Perfect Strangers.” However, arguably, no single series that originally aired on TGIF had as much impact as “Full House.”
Reportedly, the original concept for the show was to feature three single stand-up comedians living together under the same roof. It was going to be a more adult-oriented sitcom, which might have been a smidge closer to Bob Saget’s raunchy live style — if Bob had been part of that first draft, that is. The three-comedian series was pitched as “House of Comics.”

However, when the show’s creator, Jeff Franklin, was asked to come up with something much more family-oriented, the premise shifted slightly. The new story was about a widowed father (Danny Tanner) who recruits his brother-in-law (Jesse Katsopolis) and his best friend (Joey Gladstone) to help him raise his three daughters (D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle). It was called “Full House” to reflect the poker hand that Danny had been dealt, which contained a pair (Jesse and Joey) along with three of a kind (the girls).
After initial reviews dismissed the series as being too cheesy, ABC moved “Full House” behind “Who’s the Boss” to keep the show from getting prematurely canceled. The strategy worked. People discovered what a gem the series was, and it became a hit. “Full House” ran for 8 seasons, from September 22, 1987 to May 23 1995, and had 192 episodes, including five hour-long double episodes. In 2016, “Full House” returned as “Fuller House,” where it had a 5 season run on Netflix.
Dave Coulier, who played Joey, has brought back all the fun, all the life lessons, and all the nostalgia in a way that only someone who lived the experience could. His podcast, “Full House Rewind,” takes fans back to those golden days when the story of “Full House” was just beginning. In the premiere episode, Dave’s special guest is Jeff Franklin. Together, the two long-time friends talk about the early days of “Full House.”
When you watch the full episode (embedded below), you will find out if the story about “House of Comics” is actually true. Plus, you will learn who was originally cast as Danny Tanner, why John Stamos almost quit the show, and how many babies originally auditioned for the part of Michelle. However, the heart-warming magic of this episode is when Dave dedicates the first episode to his beloved friend, Bob Saget.
